I amSouth African, Chinese and Australian. I was born in Johannesburg to Chinese parents. I started playing the piano when I was four years old, before moving to Sydney, Australia at the age of seven. I am a native bilingual speaker in English and Mandarin, and fluent in Wenzhounese. I moved to the USA in 2018 to pursue my graduate studies. I hold a Master of Music in Classical Piano Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance (cognate in Piano Performance and Literature) from UIUC. Experienced in Industry and Academia, Dr. Yang is the founding director of Interdisciplinary Institute, which educates, promotes and conducts STEAM+ research. It is an inclusive hub for self-discovery, focused on innovative performance and building bridges between the university and community.
